LA Dodgers Host First Crypto Giveaway in Sports with Digital Bobbleheads

Pro sports meets the blockchain in a fun way as the LA Dodgers announce a crypto giveaway of digital bobbleheads.

Promotions in major league baseball are nothing new. Over the decades, promotional giveaways have included shirts, posters, jerseys, mugs, and so on. The most popular promotional item today is the bobblehead. Now the digital world of blockchain is meshing with sports as the LA Dodgers are giving away digital bobbleheads on September 21st.

Popular LA Dodgers Players

This is the first time that major league baseball has used the blockchain to offer a promotional item, and it may be the first time ever for sports overall. The giveaway will take place on September 21st when the Dodgers play the Padres.

The promotion will work in the following way. The first 40,000 ticketed fans at the ballpark will get a card. This card contains a code and a website. When a fan visits the website and enters the code, they will unlock a digital bobblehead that can then be stored in their Ethereum wallet.

Overall, the digital bobblehead will be one of three players: Clayton Kershaw, Justin Turner, or Kenley Jansen. The crypto token will be random, and there will be an equal amount of each player.

Justin Turner is the Dodgers’ third baseman. He was an All-Star last year, batting .322 with 21 home runs and 71 RBI. Clayton Kershaw is the team’s star pitcher, being a 7-time All-Star, NL MVP in 2014, and winner of three NL Cy Young Awards. Kenley Jansen is a closer for the team and a 3-time All-Star. He is also the defending National League saves leader.

Sports and Crypto Mix

This is an interesting promotion and one that should do well with younger fans. People today are growing up in the digital world and are quite comfortable owning a digital copy of a CD or movie instead of an actual physical product.

As for this LA Dodgers promotion, Lon Rosen, Dodger Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer, says:

We’re excited for our first-ever Crypto giveaway, and to explore an entirely new marketplace with our fanbase. We hope this piques the interest of Dodger fans, and will help launch a new age of digital collectibles and promotions.

The worlds of cryptocurrency and sports are increasingly mixing. Midway through August, the blockchain-based MLB Crypto Baseball collectible game launched. Before that, Colombian football star James Rodriguez issued his own cryptocurrency, the JR10. This coin allows holders to attend club meetings, buy souvenirs with the altcoin, and receive other perks as well.

Back in June, the Sacramento Kings basketball team began cryptocurrency mining to raise money for charity. The Ethereum mined will be used to help fund various causes in the city of Sacramento. The most recent sports and crypto mixing story is when Quantocoin, a blockchain-based platform that provides digital financial services, became a 25 percent stakeholder in the Rimini FC 1912, an Italian football (soccer) team. Quantocoin used their own native cryptocurrency to buy their stake.
